Season Finale

[tempting_the_fates]

It was a partly closed set today, only a few crew and actors who needed to be there. Spoilers, right?

Nyx was reviewing the changes to the script, perched on a chair off to the side of the cameras. He'd seen Hex, had seen House hanging around as well, though he was in his own little world as he turned the page and reviewed the highlighted parts. However, he did glance up when he noticed one of them heading his way.

"Yeah, how maniacal is he?" Hex asked. "It ain't just opportunity, yeah?"

"I think Jett's probably too smart," House said. Then looked at Hex. “He’s not maniacal,” he said finally. “He thinks he’s helping. That’s what makes him terrifying. Maniacs are easy to spot. Caleb’s polite. Soothing. He’s the guy who holds your hand and tells you it’s okay to let go.”

House tapped the pen in his hand against his leg.

“He doesn’t want to kill people. He wants to be needed." Pause. "Play him like he’s the calmest man in the room. And make the audience realize too late that he’s the one setting the fire.”

Nyx nodded a bit, then wet his lips with a flick of his tongue.

"Works for me," he said. "They wanted to know if you wanted my costume taken in or if you think having the scrubs slightly oversized is better."

House's instructions only hurt when Nyx mentioned taking his scrubs in. Caleb wasn't any real stretch because Hex, too, was soothing.

Just...not a psycho.

He hid his reaction by pulling out his phone to jot a note of what House had said.

"Have them take them in a bit," House said. "I think that Jett would."

"I'll let them know," Nyx nodded, pretty sure they'd already taken a set in just in case. "They were talking about cutting my hair, but I said Jett wouldn't do that," he told House, before looking over at Hex.

"You think he'd cut his hair?"

"... no," said House. "Not until he had to. Until vanity pushed him to it."

Hex agreed by shaking his head.

"He'd never," he echoed.

Nyx touched his hair, aware of the places where it was starting to thin slightly due to the chemo.

"Yeah," he agreed quietly, falling silent after that.

Hex caught the look in Nyx's eye and looked over at House.

"But if make up insists on a cut, write it in and let Caleb cut his hair. You know, to take care of him," he suggested.

His gaze slid to Nyx to see if he would be comfortable with Hex doing it, even if it meant a little public roleplay like they'd talked about.

House couldn't exactly pinpoint why, but there was something weird about that exchange. He glanced between them. "Suggestion noted," he said. "But for right now we've got this scene ahead of us. Are you two ready, or do you want to rehearse first?"

Nyx didn't want to cut his hair, didn't want to see more evidence of the cancer. He said nothing about it though, lost in his own thoughts.

"Whatever Hex would rather."

[just_hex]

He could see a storm brewing in Nyx's eyes and he shrugged.

"I wouldn't mind going over lines a few times first," he said. "We can step over there..."

“Sure,” Houae said. “I’ll give you some notes.” He gestured for Hex to lead the way.

Nyx got up to follow along, script in hand still. He never really stopped looking at it until he was in front of a camera.

"What do we want to start with? The big scene at the end?" he asked.

"Yeah, let's figure it out for maximum drama, yeah?" he suggested.

Once they were away from most eyes, Hex gently laid his hand on Nyx's back.

Most eyes. Not House’s. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He wasn’t delusional, and he never said a word to Nyx about Hex, but fuck if he didn’t hate having to watch.

He sat in a chair on the other side of the hospital room set.

Nyx leaned into the touch without realizing he was doing it.

"Um- Let's start with the part where you come in the room and Jett's trying to clean himself up a bit," he suggested.

[just_hex]

"Alright, good spot," he nodded, flipping pages.

He started his lines, acting as if he'd walked in on Jett and studied him curiously for a moment.

"You look like you could use a hand," he said kindly, shifting instantly into Caleb.

House watched as they went through the scene, providing a couple of notes along the way and then suggested they try it again.

This time Nyx played it a bit more quiet- Fragile, even. Jett was always so confident, cocky even, but this time he pulled that back, offering something a bit more raw. ...Maybe something a bit more honest and real. It was Jett, he never stopped being Jett, but there was something of himself in there too now. A fragility he tried to keep to himself that in the moment he decided to let out.

"I don't want to die," he said, his voice cracking slightly this time when he said the line.

Hex's face conveyed everything all at once. Pity, compassion, disgust, determination...

"You don't need to be afraid," he assured him, a certainty to his words that was a bit chilling.

House actually needed to look away for a moment at that line from Nyx.

When they finished the scene he said, “No notes. Are you ready to roll camera or do you want a moment?”

"I'm good," Nyx said, even though he wasn't sure that was true. He was in the zone now though, and he didn't want to lose it.

"Good," Hex nodded. "Let's do it."

He brushed Nyx's back one more time before they got to set and got to work.
