He'd told his manager he wasn't sure the part was for him, that he didn't think he looked much like a doctor- And he didn't. He'd turned out to be a damned fine actor, good enough to leave music behind, but he still looked like a rock star with his long wild hair and those eternally tired eyes.

"Just go, see how it goes," his agent had urged. "This could be a breakout role for you in America."

So now he was here in some room with a dozen other actors he sort of recognized, slouched low in his seat as his eyes skimmed over them all. He was judging in silence, but definitely judging.

"Bit more high-brow than my sound," Nyx laughed. "Nice that you play though. It's good for the soul, I think."

“Maybe so,” House said. “I do tend to play more when everything else is shit. So what made you want to try acting anyway?”

"I was approached by a director who thought I'd be good for a film he was making. He asked if I'd be willing to audition. The band had decided to take a hiatus anyway, so I thought I'd just see what happened. He wound up giving me the role. and I found I really liked it. It was fun being someone else for a bit," Nyx said with a little shrug.

“What was the role?” House asked. “In the film.” He took another drink, well into the margarita already.

"Tragic best friend who takes his own life," Nyx said, finishing his taco.

“Dark,” said House.

The waiter came back over with more food, and House snagged a taco before gesturing to Nyx to help himself to the chips. He took a bite and after he was done added, “One film is very different than being a series regular.”

"Oi, I've done more than one," Nyx laughed. "You saw my resume, I've got a few films under my belt now, and I did a mini series too. ...And I know, I get it, American shows run forever. Surely if I get bored in a few years you'll just kill me off, give me some awful illness or whatever. Oh, or let someone shoot me. That'd be great for ratings."

“I’ll keep that in mind,” said House. “Still no promises though. The producers have to sign off on you. Before they sign the checks.”

Nyx just grinned, shrugging one shoulder and polishing off another drink.

"So you were a doctor, right? I saw that much online. Couldn't say no to the spotlight?"

“We’re being the operative word,” House said. “And showrunners aren’t really in that much of a spotlight right? You won’t see me in front of a camera.”

"You know what I mean," Nyx said, shaking his head and pushing his hair out of his face with one hand. "You still get to go to the parties and the awards shows."

House made a face. “Do I have to?”

"You telling me you don't like shiny awards? We are two very different people. I keep all my Brit awards and the like on a nice little shelf. I have a Bafta even," he added proudly.

“Awards are fine,” House said. “Awards shows seem fucking insufferable.”

"They're not so bad. I even played a few," Nyx admitted, thanking the server as his drink was topped up yet again.

“There was a piece in Variety about the show getting picked up that described me as having a bedside manner that could sour milk,” House snorted. “I’m not a fan of rubbing elbows.”

"Oh yeah? You've been nice enough to me," Nyx pointed out, flashing that little grin again.

"You haven't annoyed me yet," House said. "Give it time." He drained the last of the margarita and gestured to the server for another.

"Being mean to me won't scare me off, I like that," Nyx said sweetly, grinning to himself and then checking his phone when it beeped. Whatever it was Nyx showed no emotion as he read it, then tucked the phone away again.

"... do you," House said, wondering how serious that was. Just an interesting thing to know.

He watched him with his phone and then asked, "Have you already moved to LA?"

"I'm on a temporary work visa, so yeah I had to get a place. I'm doing a weekly podcast about music," he explained. "Really just an excuse to be here, but it's for the American branch of the label I'm signed to."

House nodded. He kind of hated podcasts though.

The server brought him another margarita and he took a drink. "So do you have questions for me? Pretend you've got the part and you're trying to decide whether to take it."

"Alright... Where do you see my character going in the long run?" Nyx asked, sipping his drink. "I see how he's starting, but is he going to become more of a team player? A fuck up? Is he going to become some kind of golden boy?"

"He's an adrenaline junkie," said House. "Which leads to fuck ups, but he's smart enough that he usually comes out okay. Though that can't last forever."
