He'd told his manager he wasn't sure the part was for him, that he didn't think he looked much like a doctor- And he didn't. He'd turned out to be a damned fine actor, good enough to leave music behind, but he still looked like a rock star with his long wild hair and those eternally tired eyes.

"Just go, see how it goes," his agent had urged. "This could be a breakout role for you in America."

So now he was here in some room with a dozen other actors he sort of recognized, slouched low in his seat as his eyes skimmed over them all. He was judging in silence, but definitely judging.

Nyx looked at the pages again, flicking through, then looking at House.

"I won't pretend I'm itching to be on telly for the next decade playing the same role, and I know that's how a lot of these shows go, but I think it could be interesting- The role, the show... I think it could be fun even."

"Word on the street is I'm hard to work with," House said.

"Are you? Just wait until you google me," Nyx grinned. "The British tabloids would have you believe I'm a diva and a tart to boot- But only half the stories are true. ...Alright, maybe slightly more than half. For example, the story about how I left that TV presenter a top hat full of kittens outside his hotel room while high as a kite did, in fact, happen. So did the thing where I threatened to throw myself in front of a train on the underground- But the thing about taking a piss in the middle of Harrods definitely didn't. I'm a very friendly drunk, I would have at least found a plant pot. ...If you do rally for me, you should know it's only a matter of time before all that gets dragged over here."

House snorted, amused. “This character is a diva and a tart,” he said. “And if you’re playing him I guess he’s someone who would actually say tart.” He paused and then added, “You may want to google me too, though I’m afraid it’s not quite that salacious.” Though the “drug problem” leading to losing his license was the worst of it really, House didn’t give a shit if the other writers and some of the actors on his last show hated him.

"Maybe I will," Nyx purred, looking House over and then flashing that flirty smile.

Oh god House hoped that the kid didn’t think he needed to flirt with him to get the part. That would be humiliating. Though a little part of him found it fun to pretend for a moment. He offered him a little smile in return.

“Well I guess… I don’t really need to see anymore,” he said.

"Yeah, want me to send the others away?" Nyx joked as he got to his feet and offered his hand.

“Nah, I’ll do it,” House said. He stood as well, shifting his weight to his good leg, and took his hand. “You’ll hear something more soon.”

Nyx raised a brow at that, then nodded- Then hesitated a beat before asking.

"Do you want to get a drink? Not trying to grease your palm or anything, Just, you know... I don't really know anyone here yet," he admitted.

House looked surprised. “Just to be clear, you do know my palm doesn’t need greasing, right?”

"It was just an offer," Nyx assured him with a laugh. "I might not have made it here yet, but I promise the money is still coming in. I don't need to beg or blow for work. If things don't work out in LA, I've got my music and my fame back home to fall back on," he shrugged.

He must know what it would look like, House thought. House certainly didn't care. But to a casual observer, why the hell else would this guy want to go out with him?

"I'd just hate for your poor taste in company to sully your reputation," House said. "But sure, I'll have a drink with you. Maybe we could meet up in a few hours." He scrawled his number on a post-it note and passed it across the desk.

"I've already got a bad reputation, maybe you'll improve it," Nyx said with a laugh. He took the number and nodded. "There's a Mexican place with a full bar that's good. I'll text you the address," he added.

"Sure," said House, and found himself wondering if he actually would. "I'll... see you soon, then."

He really did just kind of want to send the others home. At least one of them had been very close to being on the "you look like you belong in a soap opera" chopping block already.

"See yah," Nyx said, swaggering out the door back into the waiting area, and lighting a cigarette before he was even fully out on the street again.

About half an hour later a text came through for the place he'd mentioned, along with a photo of some tacos and a margarita.

That was a bit earlier than House was expecting, but he decided, fuck it. He'd already sent the other actors away and spoken to the casting director anyway. He sent a text that said: I see you got started without me.

He got there about 20 minutes later. "Is this still your first margarita?" he asked as he slid into the seat across from him.

"...Sure," Nyx said with a laugh. "I mean it's bottomless, so It could be."

House snorted. "It was a long day," he said. "I need to catch up."

Nyx waved the waiter over.

"Order whatever you like, my treat," he added with a shrug. "How'd the rest of the auditions go?" he asked, genuinely interested.

House asked for the same of what Nyx was drinking, and then some tacos, and chips and guac.

When the waiter was gone, he looked back to Nyx. "I had one more of them audition, and sent the rest away." He looked thoughtful and added, "You know, that last guy probably thinks it's because he nailed it. He did not."

"Nice to have that sort of self esteem, I suppose," Nyx laughed, sipping his drink and looking thoughtful.

"How's your self esteem?" House asked.

"I'm a rockstar, it's obnoxious, I'm sure," Nyx joked, grinning a bit. Though there was something about the way he said it that rang false.

House clocked the uncertainty behind that, but he didn't comment on it.

"I looked you up," he said. "Watched one of your videos on YouTube."

"Yeah? What did you think?" Nyx asked, finishing his drink just in time for a server to walk by and top him up again. "You can be honest."
